Drenching night sweats are a common symptom of menopause, which occurs when a woman’s menstrual cycle ceases owing to decreased hormone levels. “Menopause is a major cause of night sweating,” Dr. Derbyshire noted.
“Before, during, and after menopause, many women endure hot flushes and nocturnal sweats. This is assumed to be due to estrogen and progesterone production variations.”
However, there are certain things you can take to alleviate the night sweats in this situation. “Lifestyle changes such as sleeping in a cool room and avoiding alcohol may help,” she added. “If these modifications are ineffective, your doctor may recommend hormone replacement therapy (HRT).”
According to research, the nutrient magnesium aids in the reduction of hot flushes. Magnesium is present in nuts, seeds, grains, and beans, yet one-quarter of adult women do not meet the minimal magnesium requirement.
“As a result, supplement with a multivitamin and multimineral supplement including magnesium to fill dietary gaps.”

According to the specialist, night sweats can also be caused by hormonal issues or imbalances, which various diseases can cause. “Hormone problems may be linked to night sweats,” Dr. Derbyshire noted.
Examples include hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid hormones), diabetes, excessive blood sugar levels, and alterations in sex hormones. The hypothalamus, also part of the hormonal system, regulates body temperature.
“Hypothalamic dysfunction may be an underlying issue related to hormone problems and can also cause night sweats.”

Sweating during the night, like many other sleeping difficulties, can be caused by increased stress and anxiety. “Anxiety, panic attacks, and stress are also common causes of night sweats,” Dr Derbyshire told The Mirror.
Mineral imbalances are common in areas where sweating is frequent. Sweat has been discovered to be high in potassium, salt, calcium, magnesium, and iron. As a result, the health expert suggests eating potassium-rich foods such as “bananas, potatoes, dark leafy greens, and citrus fruits.”
Meanwhile, magnesium-rich foods include “almonds, cashews, spinach, beans, and pumpkin seeds,” while calcium is found in milk, yogurt, almonds, and broccoli, and iron is found in red meat, whole grains, and beans.
Nutritional Deficiency In The Body
If you’re sweating a lot at night, it could indicate that you’re deficient in key vitamins and minerals. “A lack of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin D and vitamin B12, can lead to excessive sweating,” Dr. Derbyshire added.
Many of us are deficient in vitamins and minerals. Vitamin D is difficult to receive through the diet because it is found in so few foods, and urban indoor lifestyles, as well as the usage of sunscreen (which is needed), can contribute to vitamin D deficiency.
“Drenching night sweats can be caused by a lack of vitamin B12, common in people over 50 and people who limit or avoid animal foods (meat and dairy) and fish.”
“Suppose you haven’t taken vitamin D all winter. In that case, your levels will be low, so top up with a supplement with the recommended 10 micrograms daily of vitamin D and ensure your B12 levels are topped up with a supplement.”
