Kento Momota accident update
The world’s top-ranked men’s badminton player from Japan, Kento Momota, was in the van when it collided with the truck early on Monday morning, killing the driver and injuring three other passengers, according to investigators. Momota won the men’s singles match at the Malaysia Masters barely hours before the accident. They were joined by Japanese trainer Akifumi Morimoto, Japanese coach Yu Hirayama, and William Thomas, a British technical adviser to the Badminton World Federation. The 24-year-old Malaysian driver was killed when the van collided with the back of a 30-ton lorry hauling sand on a highway outside of Kuala Lumpur at around 5 a.m., according to the Fire and Rescue Services Department.
The patients were taken to a hospital in Putrajaya, the seat of the federal government. Momota suffered injuries to his face and lips in addition to a fractured nose, according to statements from the Badminton Association of Malaysia and the Serdang district police. The Japanese Badminton Association, however, claims that despite Momota’s body being covered in bruises and having injuries to his chin and forehead, there is no evidence to support the claim that he has a broken nose. Morimoto sustained a concussion and a broken arm, while Thomas sustained cuts to his forehead and lower limbs. Hirayama sustained cuts to his right shin. Everyone is said to be in stable condition.
According to a representative of the Malaysian Badminton Association, Momota and the other players were travelling to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport when the incident occurred. Thomas was travelling to Jakarta while the Japanese were travelling to Tokyo. A regular stream of well-known visitors, including Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, the wife of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, and Lee Chong Wei, the former world No. 1, visited the badminton champion and other accident victims at the hospital. The 93-year-old had sat through Momota’s Sunday finals performance.
