According to Prithpal Singh, forest and wildlife officer of the Ludhiana range, after the society’s management contacted the district administration, a team from the forest department visited the area but discovered no evidence of the leopard.

“We are putting up cages and checking around,” the officer stated, “but until then, we request society residents to stay inside their homes and move out only if there is any emergency.”

“Usually when it starts snowing in upper hilly areas in the northern region, animals such as leopards, sambhar, deer, etc. start moving towards the plains.”

Why was the leopard seen in the residential area?

Singh theorised as to why the leopard was observed in a residential area. Because they normally move at night, we’d need at least two days to find it again. Leopards can travel 100–200 kilometres in a single night, so it is possible that they have gone out by now, but residents should remain wary.”
