How Shivling Originated
According to legend, after the creation of the universe, there was a war between Lord Vishnu and Brahma over who was more powerful. During this, a shining stone appeared in the sky and it was said in the sky that whoever finds the end of this stone will be considered the most powerful. Lord Vishnu and Brahma ji started looking for the end of that stone but neither could find the end.
Tired, Lord Vishnu himself accepted defeat. But Brahma ji thought that if I too accept defeat, Vishnu will be called more powerful. That is why Brahmaji falsely said that he had found the end of the stone. Meanwhile, again there was a voice from heaven saying that I am Shivling and I have neither end nor beginning and at the same time Lord Shiva appeared.
what does the other story say
The history of Shivling is several thousand years old. Among all the deities, Shiva is the only God whose linga form is worshipped. According to another legend, his story is connected with the turmoil of the ocean. When the poison originated during the churning of the ocean, Mahadev accepted it to protect the entire universe.
Due to which his throat turned blue. Since then his name has become Neelkanth. But because he took poison, the burning of Lord Shiva’s body increased. To extinguish that fire, the tradition of offering water to the Shivling began, which continues to this day. Shivling is worshiped as a symbol of Lord Shiva.
