Outer space is a realm of endless wonder, where astronomers continually find astonishing insights about the cosmos. Recently, a planet from beyond our solar system has captured widespread attention for a truly extraordinary phenomenon.
This Planet Gets Rained With Gemstones During The Monsoon
On this celestial body, when rain falls, it doesn’t splash water trinkets but rather, it is said to shower precious gemstones. If you find this hard to believe, then read on!
This remarkable planet has been named WASP-121b, as reported by Physics World.
Surprisingly, scientists have discovered that on one side of this planet, it rains precious gems like sapphires and rubies. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology used NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope to study this planet.
Their discoveries show that WASP-121b is bigger than Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. What makes WASP-121b unique is that it moves around its host star very quickly, taking just 30 hours for one orbit because it’s very close to its star. This interesting planet is about 850 light-years away from Earth and is often called a “Hot Jupiter.”
Scientists Noticed Some Unusual Activity On The Planet
Mikal-Evans, who works at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, shared that their study started when the astronomers saw some strange things happening at the transition line between daytime and nighttime on the planet, which is called the day-night boundary.
During an interview, Mikal-Evans stated, “Previous observations showed that titanium was missing from the atmosphere, but its chemical cousin vanadium was present in the atmosphere.” He further pointed out that because these two elements share similarities, it was quite unusual to observe the presence of only one of them.
He disclosed that the temperatures on the night side of the planet plummet to such extremes that they result in rainfall consisting of titanium and aluminum. As this aluminium condenses and combines with elements like chromium, iron, and titanium, it undergoes a transformation into precious gemstones such as ruby and sapphire.
