Hollywood actor Barry Newman passes away at 92: Barry Newman, the acclaimed actor who received an Emmy nomination for his role in the cult 1971 action film “Vanishing Point” and played the titular lawyer on the NBC series “Petrocelli” passed away on May 11 at the age of 92. No additional information is currently known about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Newman took on the role of Kowalski, a former race car driver caught up in a criminal plot, in the film “Vanishing Point.” As a character, he speeds around in a Dodge Challenger, making him an iconic part of the movie. Among fans of the genre, the film is considered a quintessential American action film of the 1970s.
More than 20 years later, Newman took on a major role in Steven Soderbergh’s complex crime story “The Limey,” where he played a menacing character. The film included an intense car chase in its second act, in which the actor once again demonstrated his driving skills.

Before embarking on his acting journey, Newman was drafted into the military. While serving, he showcased his musical talents by playing the clarinet and saxophone as part of the army band, according to Variety.
After his military service, Newman moved to New York to pursue his acting aspirations under the direction of Lee Strasberg. He gained prominence by appearing in numerous Broadway productions, including Mel Tolkin’s “Maybe Tuesday” and Agatha Christie’s renowned “The Mousetrap.”
Subsequently, Newman ventured into the realm of feature films and achieved a breakthrough with his starring role in the 1970 film “The Lawyer.” A few years later, he received a major break when he was offered the lead role in the highly acclaimed television series “Petrocelli,” which was built upon his performance in “The Lawyer.” His portrayal in “Petrocelli” earned him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, cementing his status as a talented actor.

Following his part in “Petrocelli,” Newman continued to expand his acting portfolio by taking part in various projects. These included notable works like “Fatal Vision,” “King Crab,” “Bowfinger,” and “Daylight.”
In 2009, Newman was diagnosed with vocal cord cancer, which led him to cut back on acting projects. However, he did make a notable appearance in the independent drama “Finding Hannah” in 2022. Newman is survived by his wife, Angela.
