A light plane crash off the coast of Washington State was survived by a woman and her teenage son. After the plane crashed into the water off Leighton Beach in North Fremantle, the two managed to escape and swim to land, according to police. Just after 5 p.m. (WST) on Thursday, the plane crashed about 30 to 50 meters offshore before being nearly completely submerged in the water, according to WA Police. When they arrived at the beach, paramedics examined the 45-year-old pilot Michelle Yeates and her 15-year-old son Jacob.

They survived the collision uninjured but in shock. They were both able to leave the aircraft and swim to land, according to a statement from the police. After watching the solar eclipse on Thursday from Carnarvon, the two were taking a flight from Geraldton to Jandakot Airport. Yeates, a commercial pilot, observed that the plane’s engines were having problems and sent a mayday call. She was compelled to put the aircraft down into the lake a short while afterward. After the jet crashed, shocked bystanders on the beach reportedly swam out to the craft in an effort to save the pilot and passenger.

The witnesses informed the media that they found it hard to believe the two managed to get away. It’s believed that once the kid unlocked the door, the mother and son exited the plane via the wing, dove into the ocean, and then swam to land. The mother claimed she had a limited amount of time to raise the alarm and secure a safe landing. “I was only at 1500 feet, I didn’t have much time to react, so I just sent out a mayday to the tower and then just turned around and landed on the water,” she recalled.
